…of the day: julie being julie being julia
To those who know me, it’s no secret that I loved the movie “Julie and Julia”. The main character, Julie (aside from sharing my name), is someone that I could totally relate to. Her determination to do something crazy like get through the entire Julia Child cookbook on an insane schedule is totally something that I would do. Admittedly, I hadn’t cooked for myself in a long time.. you know, other than the occasional ‘gourmet’ grilled cheese sandwich. I found pleasure in eating out or ordering in, thinking it was saving me time despite the costs associated to it.
But since seeing Julie and Julia, I’ve had a craving to start making things from scratch. And I’ve done a lot of that lately as I’ve found it to be a great distraction from smoking (I quit cold turkey about a month ago!). I’ve run into some pretty solid challenges, namely the lack of tools and ingredients as I’ve googled my way around how to measure without measuring cups and spoons to what to use to replace certain spices, oils and random ingredients that I just didn’t have handy!
I’ve taken a liking to having my groceries delivered in the wintertime as I generally don’t have to spend too much time picking out fresh items (I’ve been eating only in-season fruits and vegetables as much as possible for the last little while now). But I made a few clumsy mistakes and instead of ordering 2 tomatoes, I ended up with about 4kg worth. I also accidently ordered a gigantic box of Rice Krispies and a similarly huge bag of marshmallows (friends, expect random gifts of rice krispie squares!). Despite all that, I opened up my grocery boxes with delight as I ordered all of my chocolate truffle making ingredients and they were all included in the delivery! For those who aren’t familiar with grocery delivery, the reason why this is exciting is because sometimes, you don’t get everything you ordered because they don’t have it in stock. But my ingredients were there this time! My almond slices, banana, almond, rum and vanilla extracts, white chocolate, milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, Jersey bars, walnuts, whipping cream… you name it, I’ve got it.
One problem however….
… where’s it all going to go??? The box of Rice Krispies (for peanut butter balls) doesn’t even fit in any of my cupboards!
I guess I should have asked for a pantry for Christmas?
I’ll post an update later to let you know how my first attempt at truffle-making went. And if you’re lucky, you might get to sample some!
