…of the day: One thing leads to another!

A few days ago, I received an email from a literacy organization from Sudbury who had found my name and contact info from a volunteer site that I had registered with years ago. Unfortunately, I don’t live in Sudbury anymore but it got me thinking about the topic of literacy because it’s something that I care about tremendously. It’s not just literacy, but also the want and need to teach children and adults how to read and how to think critically about what they’ve read (there is enough propaganda in the world – that will be a topic for an article later on!).

Anyway, while thinking of this, I started thinking about posting a blog entry about my favourite book of 2009 and then I thought, “wait a minute, what is everyone else reading??”. So from literacy came the idea to send a bunch of emails out to people that I respect, people I admire, people whose answers I was curious to know, people from a variety of backgrounds. And the replies have been great so far! By the end of 2009 and possibly trickling into early January, I’ll be publishing a series of articles as part of a new “Featured Articles” addition to my blog. I really look forward to sharing this with you and perhaps you’ll find a book from this list that you will love in 2010!

Most of all, I’d love to hear your feedback about the book you loved the most this year… Tell me why you loved it.  Tell me what book you want to read first in 2010!  Tell me what book you loved the most this decade!

For any of you in the Sudbury region who might be interested in volunteering your time to help children as part of a literacy program, please visit this posting in the myCommunity section of the mySudbury website.

I wish all of you a safe and happy Holiday season!
