Books of 2009: Business Leaders

Rick Dalmazzi – President, Magmic Games

Book of 2009: Rise and Shine: A Novel by Anna Quindlen

“One of my favorite authors is Anna Quindlen. Her back-page columns for Newsweek magazine are delightfully humorous and insightful, whether the topic be Afghanistan or animal crackers. Though her earlier novels were more highly acclaimed, the subject matter of Rise and Shine resonated with me the most. As the father of two daughters, I enjoyed Ms. Quindlen’s treatment of the relationship between two sisters, one the co-host of a popular morning TV show, and the other a worker at a women’s shelter. The book will appeal to parents or siblings who have ever asked themselves the question, ‘how can two people from the same parents growing up in the same household possibly be so different?!’”

Rick Dalmazzi is a serial CEO who has lived and worked in cities across Canada and the United States. He has led technology companies ranging in size from start-up to publicly-traded. While living in Silicon Valley Rick was a pioneer in handheld computing and helped bring to market the first pen-based PDA, a predecessor to the groundbreaking Palm Pilot. Rick has been in and around the mobile computing market throughout his career, and is currently the President of Magmic Mobile Entertainment, an Ottawa based publisher of digital content for the BlackBerry, iPhone, and other handhelds. Rick and his wife Linda live in rural Kanata, and have two daughters attending university, Lisa a theatre major who wants to work on Broadway in musical theatre, and Laura a computer major who wants to work for the government in social services.

John Criswick – CEO, Magmic Games

Book of 2009: 140 Characters: A Style Guide for the Short Formby Dom Sagolla

“I have gone through a ton of books in 2009 but the most recent and one I find most interesting of late is “140 Characters” by Dom Sagolla.
It was published in 2009.
I like it because it sets the tone for the Twitter revolution that has happened through 2009 but is about to dawn on everyone this coming year.”

Peter Aceto – CEO, ING Direct Canada

(On a related note to John Criswick’s book pick, I decided to experiment with various forms of communication when I was contacting potential participants for my book list series. In the case of Peter Aceto’s pick, I asked him via my first ever direct message on Twitter. I was surprised that direct messages were also limited to 140 characters! Here’s Peter’s Twitter reply to my question asking him for his pick for 2009!)
