…of the day: Dancing in the sky

Due a death in the family, I’ve had to head North again.  I won’t have time to write a blog entry until later this week but I was able to put this video together rather quickly.  At the most unfortunate of times, we need a bit of beauty.

This was filmed during my first trip home about a week and a half ago.  I’ve had the Prism Quantum stunt kite for a while now.  I saw a photo of a 75 foot red tail on an online kite store a while back and I had no idea if it would work with the Quantum but I simply had to have it!  After it sat in my closet for about two years, I finally decided to give it a shot. I bought some heavy Musie fishing line (I think it’s 60lb?), tied a few very careful knots (MacGyver would have been proud) and got my Dad to help me unravel the tail before lift off.

This is the result of a very long wait…. When it launched, it took my breath away! I was flying it in about 20km/h winds and began with 100 feet of 300lb line but immediately switched to 100 feet at 150lb. Flying with such a long tail is really a very, very different feeling.  It’s as though it’s heavy but easily balanced and your arms just feel that much longer, if that makes any sense! Pulling or pushing for turns feels dramatically different and it pulls a lot more but it’s do-able for sure.  Really, I was just blown away by the elegance… kept stalling the kite so that I could just watch how the wind carried the tail.  Most of all, the timing was perfect: I had been waiting to attach the tail during the wintertime because I thought the contrast would be much more significant against a white, snowy background and I was right!  Definitely hoping to fly it again before the snow melts.

Such a beautiful, beautiful experience.

Now, I’m debating whether or not buying and trying out its larger sister, the 150 foot tail, would be a good idea or not.  ;)

This is beautiful. And I love the musical accompaniment.

Thank you. You should see it in person. When you return from the West, we should go fly it together.
