101 in 1001: a Turkish doumbek for me!

One of things I really wanted to do with my 101 list is to encourage myself to buy things for myself once in a while. I tend to live a pretty frugal lifestyle where most of my money goes towards the essentials and towards a few things like books and once in a blue moon, a video game. Since I quit smoking, I’ve been setting aside $105 every two weeks (that’s what it used to cost me for the purchase of cigarettes). I’ve spent that money on a few fun things, mostly more books and a few outings. Tonight, I wanted to spend some of that on something really exciting: a new drum and specifically, a Turkish-style drum.

So I shopped online for a few hours to find the one that would cry out my name.  It’s hard to shop online for an instrument because you can’t try it out but I took the time to listen to samples (aluminium vs. copper, for example) and settled on finding a copper drum.  After doing some price comparisons and checking out store reviews, I placed my order.  This is my new baby:  made by Meinl, 7.5″, hand engraved shell, copper drum with natural rawhide.  It’s my very first Turkish-style darbuka (doumbek).

So, with that purchase, I can officially cross off the first item from my 101 list:

91. Buy myself a Turkish doumbek – DONE!
