Even though I’m not feeling well, I still have 101 goals to achieve over the next 1001 days. I purposely made some of them easier to accomplish, in the sense that it didn’t require me to leave my home or to spend any money or to exert myself physically. One of these objectives was the perfect fit for this weekend and I crossed it off my list!
90. Update my box of treasures – DONE!
(See the entire 101 list here.)
My box of treasures is just that – a box where I keep things that evoke fond memories for me. The bulk of it contains things like old journals (some that date back to when I was in elementary school!), cards, notes, certificates, academic achievements (like my favourite essay on genetic engineering for an ethics class). Here’s a photo of some of the things that were in the box before I added new stuff to it:
Amongst the items that are in this photo are (left from right, starting at the top):
- copies of magazines that I wrote for when I worked as a freelance writer in the animation and film industry;
- a Black History Month magazine from 2001;
- a napkin turned into an origami dove by a girl that I adore;
- signed hockey cards by some of the women from Canada’s Olympic hockey team;
- two tape recordings of some of the University lectures I snuck into;
- a series of photos, mostly of myself and family;
- postcards from friends;
- two ‘drawings’ that I did in meetings at work (I tend to draw in meetings because the majority of the time they’re useless AND boring).
And below, the things I’ve added to my box of treasures:
Amongst the items that are in this photo are (left from right, starting at the top):
- Various cards/notes sent to me by friends;
- A dear friend of mine made me a jar of quotes, ranging from quotes about the arts, about love, about insects and more. One of the quotes I loved the most was: “All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” So I kept that one;
- A fish-shaped little bag with a zipper sent from Portugal – it had seashells in it;
- A few little sketches that I made here and there – one at work, the other in Montreal, and the other is my first nude photo of myself;
- A necklace that I wore religiously for years: a lot of interesting memories are attached to that necklace;
- An Iceman card;
- A page containing writing in Tigrinya (Eritrean language) and Arabic, when an ex was teaching me how to write in both languages;
- A Centennial coin from back home;
- The business card for Zahra Haddad, my drum instructor (I held on to it for a year before giving her a call to start my doumbek lessons!)
- Various photos of people I love(d);
- The last watch I wore before swearing to never wear a watch again;
- A text I wrote for the wonderful Portuguese artist, Paula Rosa, for her exhibition; it was published for the show;
- A beautiful print on material that I received from a friend who spent time in Brazil.
And there it is: my box of treasures. Do you have a place where you keep stuff like this or am I the only one who gathers it all in one place? Anything you want to share about your favourite item(s)?
Also, don’t forget to enter your name for the draw for the April Book of the Month giveaway!

I have a box like this too <3 Guess it's simply a girl's thing
Those items I keep are not extraordinary nor anything, but they do have a special meaning to me, and that's what it's all about right?
Have a nice week ahead Julie <3
Haha, I wonder if it is a girl thing or not?! (If there are any men reading this, let me know!)
Thank you, Lucia. Have a wonderful week too!
